Promising Debut at Phillip Island
Ruairi Avern has made his competitive debut in the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge at the iconic Phillip Island GP circuit, delivering performances that underlined his potential despite a challenging introduction to the series.
Qualifying in wet conditions, Ruairi immediately showed his credentials by securing P6 in a 24-car field, placing him firmly amongst the front-running rookies.
The three races that followed tested his resilience. Debut nerves and a string of safety car interventions contributed to difficult outings in Races 1 and 2, but Ruairi refused to be discouraged, and Race 3 told a very different story. Starting from the back of the grid, he produced a stunning drive, overtaking five cars off the line alone and continuing to pick his way methodically through the field to cross the line in P5. Across the three races, he registered nearly 30 overtakes, a testament to his natural racecraft.
The weekend concluded with Ruairi classified 9th overall and 5th in the Jim Richards Enduro Trophy, a solid foundation for a driver clearly still finding his feet in the series.
"The pace is clearly there," said Ruairi afterwards. "It was a weekend of highs and lows but above all, a weekend of learning. Round 2 cannot come soon enough."
